art-tistic movies

woah, time flies when you are having fun! in a twinkle of an eye, it's almost the end of february. (guess i forgot to set the alarm clock for the end of september!) so much has happened over the past few months, lots of meetings and planning for 2014. this year, a personal goal of mine is to 'go big or go home'. after all, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

anyway, instead of telling you of all the wonderful things that have been happening for the kaki bukit cac team, i would like to recommend you two movies that you must catch. one is from a while back while the other is on the big screens now (so do catch it!).

so the first movie is CZ12.

it a jackie chan flick. you will get your usual martial arts moves but more importantly, it speaks of the rich art of china and its cultural significance. i watched the full movie online so if you are keen on watching it, just google for it. it's an easy search.

the other movie that i caught over the weekend is the monuments men.

it stars george clooney and matt damon (ladies, SCREAM!). you can read one of the reviews here. beyond that, the real stars are the artworks that one gets to see. the plot is simple yet the message is multi-tiered. is art worth dying for? that is a question that only the individual can answer.

if you are wondering what to do with that $10 in your pocket this week, i hope that i've helped you solve that problem.

Mother Father Gentleman

I would have very much liked to blog about Psy's new song Gentleman when it was released, but unfortunately my column only comes once a month. Better late than never they say!

If you don't understand Korean, it sounds like Psy is repeating a cuss word over and over again. But this is actually what it means...

I don't know if you know why it needs to be hot
I don't know if you know why it needs to be clean
I don't know if you know, it'll be a problem if you're confused
I don't know if you know but we like, we, we, we like to party

Hey there
If I'm going to introduce myself
I'm a cool guy with courage, spirit and craziness
What you wanna hear, what you wanna do is me
Damn! Girl! You so freakin sexy!

Ah Ah Ah Ah I'm a...
Ah Ah Ah Ah I'm a...
Ah Ah Ah Ah I'm a mother father gentleman

I don't know if you know why it needs to be smooth
I don't know if you know why it needs to be sexy
I don't know if you know darling, hurry and come be crazy
I don't know if you know, it's crazy, crazy, hurry up

Hey there
Your head, waist, legs, calves
Good! Feeling feeling? Good! It's soft
I'll make you gasp and I'll make you scream
Damn! Girl! I'm a party mafia!

Ah Ah Ah Ah I'm a...
Ah Ah Ah Ah I'm a...
Ah Ah Ah Ah I'm a mother father gentleman

Gonna make you sweat.
Gonna make you wet.
You know who I am
Wet PSY! Wet PSY! Wet PSY! Wet PSY! PSY! PSY! PSY!
Ah I'm a mother father gentleman

I'm a, ah I'm a
I'm a mother father gentleman
I'm a, ah I'm a, I'm a mother father gentleman

Mother father gentleman

No hidden meaning behind the song like Gangnam Style. This song is indeed brainless, but a fun song to dance to at clubs, I guess... The MV also shows Psy being a total douchebag to girls he dates, until he meets a girl who is as much of a douchebag as he is.

Personally, I felt that originality was... barely there. This song was like a mash up of LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem, the Harlem Shake and Gangnam Style all mashed together. Maybe he was trying to do reverse engineering with the song after the success of Gangnam Style. But well, Psy's free to do his thing and it isn't THAT bad a song. So... alrighty then. Also, Gangnam Style had the horsey dance, and I supposed Gentleman has the hip shake - which was actually the crux of the Abracadabra dance by Brown Eyed Girls back in 2009.

Psy definitely did reference this dance well, getting Son Ga In of the Brown Eyed Girls to star in this MV with him. I reckon this song is going to be a hit with it's catchy beat and cheesy dance steps, but I'm not sure if it will do as well as Gangnam Style did.

What do you think about Psy's new song? ^^

This is The Kimchi Fairy signing out, PEACE!

ready for SM action?

ready to whip into action?

i know what you are thinking and i want you to think what you are thinking (haha!) that is the perk that i get to enjoy as a writer: i get to mislead readers without getting into (too much) trouble.

anyway, back to business, i'm going to give you a little glimpse into the action at our upcoming village. this is specific to the activities on 13th april. 12th april is just a movie screening with free snacks but if you are ready for some SM action, 13th april is your day.

taken from social media marketing

by SM, i am talking about social media. yes, it's time to test how well you can 'socialise'. we have made available three platforms:

Taylor Swift: 2.5 million followers

1) instagram: there will be three instagram instant wins. to qualify, it's simple. just turn up at the arts village and snap away. after that, make sure that you add the hashtags #kakibukitcac and #artsvillage to qualify. however those are not the only hashtags you can use. if you want to use 1001 tags, you are most welcomed to do so. when the emcee announces that the instant win is on, you can pick up a prize as long as your picture has at least 50 likes. once a picture has been used, it cannot be recycled. there are no limits to the number of entries BUT you cannot redeem more than one instant win at one moment. this means that once you have claimed a prize, you will have to join the queue AGAIN to claim your subsequent prize.

Justin Timberlake on The Social Network

2) facebook: this is a common one and i like to work within expectations. all you have to do is snap more pictures then load it onto our app on facebook. get as many of your friends to 'like' it as possible. the top five pictures with the most number of votes wins. at this moment, all i can reveal is that the prizes ARE attractive.

once the app goes live, it will be made known via our own facebook page as well as the main kaki bukit fan page so do look out for it.

(update: good news! the app has gone live... here's the link. all the best!)

3) blogging: finally, we want to encourage you to blog about us as well. tell us about the entire experience you had at our village. the top blog post will win $50 in vouchers.

in order to participate, simply turn up at our village on 12th or 13th april and then write a post about us by 20th april. send the link of your post to kakibukitcac@gmail.com, message us on facebook with the link OR tweet the link to us by using #kakibukitcac. only posts which are posted by the admins onto our main page will be considered for the contest.

in conclusion, there are plenty of opportunities for you to try out your social media skills whether it's instagram, facebook or blogging. best part? you get to win prizes along the way, so see you at our PAssionArts Village where we are going to eat your 'art' out!

hARTbeat @ kaki bukit

it took me a while to think about my opening words on this blog but i decided to just share a little piece of my heart with you and hopefully, you will catch the heartbeat of this brand-new initiative.

about half a year back, i was approached to spearhead a new grassroots team within the kaki bukit area.  it was the community arts & culture club. while i was excited over the cause, i was also concerned about the effectiveness of it. many times, people pursue art. you buy a ticket to a concert, a musical or the museum. when art is delivered to your doorstep, if you are not equipped with the necessary skills, you will be distanced from the piece. that was what i thought.

months later, i start corrected. art is ultimately a form of expression. beyond the expression of the artist, it is also a conversation with the audience and the environment. it is this constant dialogue that i aspire to create within the kaki bukit neighbourhood. therefore, i have made it a guiding principle in every programme and event that we will not only bring the art to you but converse with you over the artpiece.

Wall Mural / Street Art @ Kaki Bukit Community Centre

this blog will serve as one of those platforms for conversation and i hope that you will join my team and me as we strive to share bits of our hARTbeat with you. of course, you can also hop over to our facebook page for a piece of the action. if you are an avid instagram-mer, use the hashtag #kakibukitcac and see your pictures pop up on our widget --->
